Chapter 8

I was afraid that Hammerhead wouldn’t hang in there long enough for us to get him the medical attention he needed. I was sure that after four days without food or water, he must be severely dehydrated. He didn’t appear to have any broken bones, and it almost seemed as if, unlike Crawley, who’d clearly fallen, Hammerhead might have crawled down. Of course, if he’d climbed down of his own accord, I had to wonder what had prevented him from climbing up.

As we neared the marina, cell service became available, and I called Finn. He’d agreed to send an ambulance for Hammerhead and the coroner for Crawley. Ideally, both would be waiting when we docked. It was hard to tell if Hammerhead would make it. I was sure that getting fluids in him would go a long way toward helping him make a full recovery, but at this point, he seemed to be drifting between total unconsciousness and partial awakening.

Once the ambulance had taken Hammerhead to the hospital, and the coroner had taken custody of Crawley’s remains, the four of us secured the boat Danny had borrowed and then headed toward the bar. It was late in the afternoon at this point, but not so late as to prevent us from finding a quiet table in the back where we could process everything we’d discovered. Finn called soon after we arrived to let us know that he planned to meet us there. Apparently, my mom and Gabe, as well as Maggie and Michael, had decided to stay for dinner, so Siobhan and the kids had lots of company, and Finn felt he needed to catch up with us rather than waiting on the sidelines. He also indicated that he’d spoken to Deputy Raffton and had news to share with us as well.

“So the family has descended,” I said to Finn, who looked a bit more harassed than he had when I’d seen him last.

“In droves. Your mom and Gabe, as well as Maggie and Michael, have been there most of the day. Marley stopped by, as did Francine, Summer, and Banjo. Mr. Parsons called, but he’s having difficulty getting around with all the mud, so he wasn’t able to stop by. Cassie came by with Aiden, and Sister Mary came by with gifts for both mother and baby. I get that everyone wants to meet the newest member of the family, but Siobhan should be resting.”

“Siobhan is a strong woman who knows her mind. If she needed to rest, she would have told everyone as much,” I pointed out.

“I guess that’s true,” Finn acknowledged. “But I have to admit that I need to get some rest. Between this murder case and a baby who decided to show up two weeks early, I’m exhausted.”

I placed my hand over his. “It will slow down a bit now that everyone who is likely to stop by has done so.”

“I hope so. I’d planned to get some work done while Siobhan and the kids were napping, but it never worked out that way.
